Therapy for Women
Therapy for Women in NYC
In the US, 70-90% of women experience some form of premenstrual discomfort, 33% of those experience PMS, and 3-8% have PMDD, the most severe form of symptoms.
At The Centered Space, we specialize in working with women to explore the often-overlooked connection between hormonal health and emotional well-being. Throughout every stage of life—from puberty and fertility to postpartum and menopause—hormonal shifts can profoundly influence mood, motivation, and mental clarity.
If you have found yourself feeling more intense irritability, frustration, low mood or anxiety around your periods, or during pregnancy, or as you get into your 40s and 50s it’s not a stretch to suggest that hormones are playing a part. By taking a thorough history of your symptoms and noticing how your mood changes through these hormonal fluctuations we can help you determine whether it is more hormonal, more emotional, or a combination of the two - and to help you get the best treatment possible. Sometimes that means connecting you with medical providers, or other types of treatment to support your health. This is care that should be provided at all levels - but women’s health still lags behind.
Our psychologists are passionate advocates of building awareness of how our bodies and minds are interconnected. This approach integrates psychological insight with an awareness of the body’s natural rhythms, empowering women to recognize patterns, find balance, and cultivate self-compassion.
Understanding how hormones impact mental health can be a game-changer for many women. Here are some Q&A that might help you determine if hormone-informed therapy might be helpful for you.
Q: Who is this type of therapy for?
A: Hormone-informed psychotherapy is designed for women who want to better understand the connection between their hormones, emotions, and mental health. This approach can be especially valuable for women who notice cyclical changes in their mood, energy, focus, or relationships throughout their menstrual cycle—or who are navigating major hormonal transitions such as pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, or menopause. It is also helpful if you have PCOS or endometriosis.
If you are one of many women whose emotional experiences have been dismissed as “just hormonal” this is for you. In therapy, we take these experiences seriously and explore the science and psychology behind them to help you make sense of what’s happening in your mind and body.
Q: What kinds of challenges can this therapy help with?
A: Women’s hormones influence far more than reproduction—they affect mood regulation, sleep, cognition, and stress response. When hormonal balance shifts, you might experience emotional or physical symptoms such as:
Mood swings or irritability
Anxiety or panic
Depression or low motivation
Fatigue or brain fog
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
Changes in sleep or appetite
Heightened emotional sensitivity
Postpartum recovery
Physical and emotional changes of menopause
Therapeutic treatment builds insight and understanding of these hormonal changes, offers emotional and structured support, and can help you connect to the right physicians who may be needed to address medical aspects of your symptoms.
Q: Do I need a diagnosed hormonal or medical condition to benefit?
A: No. Many women begin this work when they notice patterns—feeling anxious before their period, irritable during perimenopause, or feeling emotionally off after pregnancy—and want to understand why. You don’t need a diagnosis to explore these experiences. In fact, therapy can often help you track your symptoms, recognize patterns, and make more informed conversations with your medical providers if needed.
The ultimate goal of our work is to help you feel more in tune with yourself - emotionally, mentally, and physically. Through this integrative approach, you can:
Understand how hormonal changes affect your mood and behavior
Develop practical tools to manage emotional ups and downs
Reduce self-criticism and build self-compassion
Strengthen emotional resilience through each stage of life
Cultivate a sense of control, clarity, and confidence in your body and mind
Q: What treatment options are available for my mental health? What treatment options are available for my family?
