Therapy for Neurodivergence

Therapy for ADHD, Autism, and Neurodivergence in NYC

We believe that neurological differences, like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, and others, are natural variations of the human brain. Recognizing neurodiversity reinforces the idea that there is no one “right” way of thinking.

In fact, neurodivergent individuals make up 15 to 20 percent of the population and deserve to have therapy that appreciates their differences and is neurodiversity-allied.

Q: How do I know if I need therapy for my neurodiversity?

Neurodivergence is not inherently a problem to be solved, so not everyone with a diagnosis may require therapy.

You may benefit from therapy if you have challenging relationships or social difficulties, if you find yourself stuck in patterns that hold you back, or if you experience mood swings, overwhelming worries, or other mental health related challenges. Here are some reasons people with Autism, ADHD, learning disabilities seek therapy:

  • Difficulty with organizing and planning

  • Emotion dysregulation - Difficulty managing intense emotions, frustration, or rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD)

  • Trauma - neurodiverse people experience trauma at a higher rate than others

  • Shame/Self-esteem - reducing shame and self-blame over internalizing labels like “lazy” or “broken”

  • Sensory overload and irritability

  • Parenting a neurodiverse child

  • Parenting as a neurodiverse adult

  • Relationship difficulties - in family, romantic, and/or work life

  • Executive functioning skills

  • Managing activities of daily life (ADLs)
